Julie Olson is a science teacher at Mitchell Senior High/Second Chance High School in Mitchell, South Dakota and current South Dakota Science Teachers Association president and newsletter co-editor. She has been teaching for 27 years. She is a 2007 Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and she holds the 2006 South Dakota Outstanding Biology Teacher award. She has been involved with numerous science projects including the Next Generation Science Standards writing team and South Dakota Science Standards writing team. Most recently, she was named a Sanford PROMISE ambassador.
A native South Dakotan, Julie earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from the University of South Dakota and is currently pursuing her Ed. D. in Curriculum and Instruction. In her “spare time” she mentors students for the science fair and science Olympiad. She also teaches biology and teacher preparatory courses for Dakota Wesleyan University. Her hobbies are reading, traveling with her family, watching the high school sports teams compete, and TaeKwonDo.
