Join us for a free PD for all current customers of ThinkCERCA!
As you approach the final quarter in the school year, it is a great time to try new approaches as trials for next year or amp up your current instruction to knock the school year out of the park. We will have 2 rounds of the breakout sessions listed below. Bring a colleague so you can divide and conquer on learning new strategies for ThinkCERCA implementation as well as unit planning, discussion protocols, and developing writing!
Please bring your own device–the sessions will be interactive with ThinkCERCA and other online planning tools!
SESSION 1: Matching Unit Themes with ThinkCERCA Lesson Sets: Your themes are set, but then there’s ThinkCERCA to incorporate into your instruction… During this session, you will use themes that you have established within your course scope and sequence and align them with ThinkCERCA content using our Scope and Sequence Standards Checklist tool. Join this session if you want to get a jump on planning, aligning, and integrating ThinkCERCA content into future thematic units. What you will need for this session is your current scope and sequence, and we will help you to build in lessons that support key skills and themes in your existing units.
SESSION 2: Writing From Bare Bones to Vitruvian Man: Are you looking for student writing that has all of the right things in all the right places? Do you want students to revise their bare bones rough drafts so that their final papers have perfect proportions? During this session you will focus on instructional decision-making based on student performance to drive instruction, determine feedback, and inform the revision process. Students use ThinkCERCA support to prepare for writing their final paper, but the final step, when they write their paper is the point where students add and polish. Teacher guidance and feedback is critical at this juncture to ensure that introductions and conclusions are strong, transitions are present, word choice is appropriate, and there is sufficient support and elaboration. Join this session if you want to take your students’ argument writing to the next level, but you would like support around moving the draft to the final step in the writing process–publishing.
SESSION 3: Handing the Reins Over – Student-centered Discussion: Yes, it’s a little scary, but well worth it! Do you want to engage students in more discussion-based approaches and debate activities, but could use a little help from your friends? Research results suggest that students whose classroom literacy experiences emphasize discussion-based approaches in the context of high academic demands internalize the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in challenging literacy tasks on their own. (Applebee & Langer). Who knew?! Join this session if you want to learn discussion and debate strategies and activities from colleagues who have walked in your shoes to infuse your classroom with lively discussion.
