The Giver by Lois Lowry is a novel about Jonas, a boy living in a strict, utopian society. Jonas demonstrates a need for individuality, though, and the story explores the role memories play in shaping each individual. The following differentiated lesson sets, applied writing lessons and free close reading lessons expand on themes of memory and individuality. Using these sets and applied lessons in my classroom helps my students explore the themes found in The Giver in other contexts and, therefore, helps them strengthen their critical thinking and debate skills.
