The novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers is about a sixteen-year-old boy named Steve who is on trial for murder. Written in narrative and screenplay form, this novel includes themes related to violence and punishment. In my classroom I use several Applied Lessons and QuickCERCAs to reveal the novel’s themes in supplementary texts. Evaluating the themes across a variety of contexts strengthens my students’ higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving tactics.
